“The chin can drop as we get older, or sometimes a person doesn’t have a ‘strong’ chin or has a jaw that is not defined as much as the patient would like,” Dr. Cohen tells PopSugar. According to Dr. Cohen, chin implants are placed through mentoplasty, or chin augmentation. This surgery aims to bring harmony to a person’s facial features by augmenting the chin. With chin implants, the chin and/or jawline can be enhanced with a half-moon shaped, silicone-based implant. An incision is made inside the mouth or beneath the chin in order to gain access to the chin, and the implant is then positioned. The size and shape of the implant can also be adjusted based on a patient’s unique facial proportions to optimize their results. It is often combined with other facial procedures, including a facelift and rhinoplasty.

Chin augmentation is an outpatient procedure that uses IV sedation. Once the incision is made and the implant is set, incisions are closed with sutures and the recovery process begins. Dr. Cohen adds that the recovery time is not very extensive, as patients can expect to return to their regular activities within five to seven days after surgery.
